Meet Douglas Oswald Seneviratne, a man whose life was a testament to the power of passion meeting profession.
A telecommunications engineer by trade, his true calling lay in the relentless pursuit of innovation. From a very young age, he was very techie-minded and enjoyed being a backyard grease monkey, toying with anything mechanical, electric, or electronic to build solutions for everyday life problems.
Having joined Sri Lanka’s vital Overseas Telecommunications Service in the late ’50s, he managed the HF relay stations and other infrastructure which facilitated international voice traffic to and from Sri Lanka. It was during this period that he single-handedly brought back to life a dead maritime radio system division at a time when there was no communication to ships from Colombo Radio, quickly developing a reputation as “a man who could do when others fail.”
Douglas’s dedication to progress didn’t stop there. With Sunpower Systems, he pioneered the Lower Uva Infrastructure Development Solar Project. This landmark initiative provided essential water supply for the rural community, along with lighting for community centres, maternity clinics, and rural hospitals, benefiting thousands of families in and around the area.
Recognising a critical need beyond traditional barbed wire fences, he became the driving force in promoting the Gallagher Electric Fence Systems to address the increasing human-elephant conflict in Sri Lanka.
Driven by a desire to do even more, Douglas founded ”Tecgate International” in the March of 1999. This venture was not just a company but a gateway, bringing cutting-edge international technology to Sri Lanka and playing a major role in the early days of wireless fixed-line telephones. Always with an eye on practical, affordable solutions, he partnered with Thunderbird of Australia to further enhance electric fencing options for local farmers. His crowning achievement in this field might be the Tega™ Striker, Tecgate’s own proprietary fence energizer, a product of years of meticulous research, proudly meeting both Sri Lankan and IEC standards and now a cornerstone of the company’s offerings.
